Chesterton Windmill – Free Days Out in Warwickshire

In my plight to have a Summer with my children like the ones I had when I was younger I’ve been trawling the local vicinity to find places that we can go to that cost minimal pennies & have maximum fun. Yesterday I shared some info on Ryton Pools Country Park which you can read here. Today it’s the turn of my favourite Warwickshire landmark. Some of you will know it, some won’t and some might just be inspired to go check it out!

Since I shared the photo above on my Facebook, I’ve had lots of people asking me where the windmill is and how to get to it. So I thought I would write a quick blog on where it is etc especially as it’s the start of the Summer holidays and we are all looking for places to visit.

Ever since I first saw Chesterton Windmill I’ve felt drawn to it, the photo taken above I took one evening on my way home from a busy day at work. I just love how calm and beautiful it is on that hill with views of rolling fields and towns far-away. If you make it there by yourself to have five minutes peace, I promise you’ll leave feeling refreshed. I sometimes see young couples up there with a book & a bottle and am insanely jealous! My god, imagine if you could get engaged & married there…anyway!

About The Windmill:

Chesterton Windmill is a unique stone windmill, built on a circular arcade with six columns. Built in 1632-3 for Sir Edward Peyto, a local landowner. The mill worked until 1910. It contains wooden machinery including a lantern pinion and two pairs of millstones. Restored in 1971, and in the care of Warwickshire County Council. There is usually an open day where the windmill is opened for two days to allow people to climb up inside and have a chance to see how it once worked. – I’ll update you all on when this will be in 2017 as it’s usually September.

– UPDATE –

Chesterton Windmill will be open on 9-10th September 2017 between 10:30 & 15:30.

Chesterton Windmill is always on our family Summer Bucket list because it holds the title of being THE BEST place to have a picnic and fly a kite! Which is something we have done on my birthday for the last couple of years.
