World Book Day 2017 Thursday 2nd March!
World Book day feels like a ‘new’ thing, in fact it has been going for 20 years. It has become a fast growing trend among schools to encourage children to dress up as their favourite book characters on World Book Day, which this year will be Thursday 2nd March 2017 which is only a couple of weeks away. No pressure Mummies!
Download a brilliant guide to creating your own no-sew costumes in our article below!
So, what’s it all about?
World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
Millions of book vouchers are sent to children and young people (more than 14 million, in fact: that’s one for nearly every child aged under eighteen in the country). They can take their voucher to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they’d rather, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop or book club.
These are the wonderful titles that will be available for free!
So, what to wear?
Dressing up outfits can be really expensive! This Harry Potter Outfit will set you back £16, but if you’re quick you could take advantage of Sainsburys 25% off which also includes their dressing up range, or why not try and make your own costumes with no sewing required?
Last year our little boy’s favourite book was The Diggers Are Coming, so naturally, we made him a Digger! It even made it on to CBeebies! It was super exciting and he loved getting involved in the making.
If you’re savvy you might have everything you need at home. Some bits you might already have could be..
A witches outfit left over from Halloween? Perfect for Room on The Broom lovers!
A skeleton onesie? Perfect for Funny Bones
Dentist Outfit? Peppa Pigs Dentist Trip
Cinderella Outfit? Thats also a book right!?
Does your little one do ballet? Angelina Ballerina!
Have some dinosaurs? Grab a bucket… Harry’s Bucket Full Of Dinosaurs!
There’s a fab list of DIY Costumes on the World Book Day Website here
Also on the World Book Day website is The Big Little Book Corner where some children’s favourites are read with images. One of my absolute favourites is on there which is called Max and the won’t go to bed show. It’s so funny a real must watch for parents and children (You’ll see what I mean)
